Compostable packaging is not one product line. A coffee counter, a restaurant kitchen and an event caterer each handle the same food in a different way, so the container that suits one is usually wrong for the next. What follows is what actually changes between industries, and which range we build for each.

Coffee shops: the cup and the lid are one unit

A drink is handed over in one hand, across a counter, and is drunk within minutes. That makes wall thickness and lid fit more important than anything printed on the cup. Hot drinks need either a double wall or a sleeve to keep the hand comfortable; iced drinks need a wall that resists condensation long enough for the cup not to soften in the holder. The lid has to seat on the rim without leaking when the cup is tilted, which is why we quote cups and lids as a pair. See packaging for coffee shops for the cup, lid and carrier set.

Restaurants and takeaway: grease and stacking

Here the food leaves the building. A closed container travels in a bag for fifteen to thirty minutes, so the two failure points are grease wicking through the board and steam turning a crisp item soft. A clamshell with a vented lid behaves differently from a sealed box, and a box that stacks badly costs more in bag space than it saves in unit price. The useful question is how high the container stacks and whether it stays flat under weight. Our restaurant takeaway range is built around those two constraints.

Catering and events: held warm, served open

Catering inverts the problem. Nothing is closed; food sits on a table and is taken by guests standing up, sometimes an hour after plating. That puts rigidity and presentation first: a plate has to stay flat when loaded on one edge, a sectioned tray has to keep sauces apart, and a bowl has to hold heat without going limp. Portion size also runs larger than retail, which usually means the largest moulds in the range. The catering and events range covers those formats.

The material decision comes after the format

Once the format is fixed, the material choice is narrow. Moulded bagasse fibre gives a rigid wall, handles oil well and tolerates a microwave, which is why it covers plates, bowls, clamshells and trays. Kraft paper gives a printable surface and lower tooling, but needs a barrier layer where grease or liquid is involved. That barrier is where the range separates: PE-coated board for a straight moisture barrier, water-based coatings where the buyer wants repulpability, and no fluorochemistry anywhere in the range. The materials guide compares them side by side.

Volume, not design, is what moves the price

Two containers that look identical can differ in cost by a factor of two, purely on order structure. Printing is priced per colour per run, so six colours across three sizes is three print setups, not one. Tooling is charged once per size, which means launching a small range properly usually beats launching a wide one thinly. Our size guide lists the capacities and carton counts to plan against, and the certifications page covers the documentation buyers usually ask for first.
