PFAS restrictions have moved from NGO campaigns to procurement rules in a small number of years, and food service packaging is squarely in scope. This page sets out why a moulded fibre bowl can be PFAS-free, and what documentation buyers usually need to prove it.
Why fibre can be PFAS-free where paper often is not
Paper packaging needs a barrier layer to resist grease and water, and historically that barrier was where PFAS entered the product. A moulded bagasse bowl gets its barrier from the fibre itself being pressed into a dense wall — there is no coating to add and therefore no fluoro-chemistry to add. That is the structural reason the claim holds.
What “PFAS-free” should mean in a quote
The claim is only useful if it comes with a defined threshold and a test method. When you compare suppliers, ask three things: what limit they declare against, which test method was used, and whether the declaration covers the printed version of the bowl as well as the plain one.
Where the rules stand
Requirements differ by market and are still moving. The practical approach is to specify PFAS-free as a baseline and keep the documentation current, rather than to treat it as a one-off certificate. See PFAS-free packaging for the buyer-side view and certifications for what we can supply.
Printing and the claim
Inks and coatings applied after moulding are a separate question from the bowl itself. If your compliance team needs the printed version covered, say so at the quotation stage rather than after artwork approval.
Questions buyers ask
Does PFAS-free apply to all sizes? The range is moulded from the same fibre; confirm per SKU on the quotation.
Can you provide a declaration for our customer’s audit? Tell us the market and the format required.
Is there a cost premium? Ask for the comparison against a standard grade so the difference is explicit.
