Disposable here means single-use, not disposable in quality. A moulded sugarcane bowl is pressed from fibre left over after sugar refining, holds its shape through a service, and then goes into the same commercial composting stream as food waste. What changes when you switch from plastic
- No separate lid stream. Fibre bowls and their matching lids go into one collection, not two.
- No film to separate. There is no laminated plastic layer, so staff do not have to peel anything at disposal.
- Different stacking feel. Fibre nests slightly tighter than plastic; check stack height on your shelf before ordering full cartons.
- Weight. 6.5g to 28g depending on size — usually lighter than the foam bowl it replaces.
Disposal: what the bowl needs to break down
Moulded fibre composts in a commercial facility with sustained heat and moisture. In a home compost heap it will break down far more slowly. If your customers dispose of packaging at home rather than through a commercial collection, be honest about that in your own messaging.
Cost per serve, not cost per case
Per-piece price is only half the comparison. Factor in the lid, the bag, and the double-cupping that thin bowls often need. The 12oz bowl is the usual volume replacement and packs 1,000 per carton; for a bigger main portion step to the 32oz.
