The 9-inch plate is 225mm across, 20mm deep and 15g — the middle of the round range and the size most operators settle on for a main course. It is large enough for a full plate and small enough to carry with one hand.
Why 225mm became the default
A main course needs roughly 225mm to place protein, starch and vegetables without contact. At that diameter the rim still falls inside a standard tray, and the plate fits a 46.5cm carton four sleeves deep. Larger formats push the case past 50cm; smaller ones crowd a dinner portion. The 9-inch sits where handling and portion size meet. Measure your tray before you go wider.
Twenty millimetres of rim
The 20mm rim does three jobs: it frames the food, it stiffens the edge against bending, and it gives a thumb something to hold. A plate with no rim flexes at the edge when loaded, which is how a plate cracks in the hand rather than in the box. At 15g the rim is thin enough to read as tableware rather than as a lid.
Three variants on one body
The plain 225mm plate is the standard. The 2-compartment version splits the base into two wells and the 3-compartment into three, both at 15g and both using the same diameter. They differ in carton: the plain and two-well cases are 46.5×34.8×24.8cm and 46.3×36.5×24.8cm, while the three-well case is 46.5×23.5×35.5cm because that stack is taller than it is wide. All three weigh the same, so the choice is menu-led.
Tableware that reads as tableware
Pressed fibre at this weight has a matte, slightly textured face that photographs well and does not glare under event lighting. For buffets and served courses that is the difference between packaging and a plate. See packaging for catering and events or compare with the 10-inch plate. The surface takes a printed logo without the sheen that coated board shows under a lamp. That is also why the plates photograph well on a menu board.
Questions buyers ask
Is 15g heavy enough for a loaded dinner plate? It is the standard weight for this diameter; tell us the portion and we will confirm.
Do the compartment versions use the same carton? No, the three-well stack changes the case dimensions.
Can the plate be printed around the rim? Yes, and a rim print frames the food neatly.
